Gemini is a light-hearted and fun-loving sign. She is playful and does not take life or herself too seriously. The symbol for this sign is the twins, and there is a dual nature to her. In truth, there is more than a dual nature to her as she enjoys learning about and experiencing many different things. One of the most common phrases associated with Gemini is, “Jack of all trades, Master of none,” or perhaps, “Jill of all trades, Mistress of none.” In any case, it is hard for this sign to stick to any one activity and instead tends to flit from one activity to another like a butterfly.
Gemini by Season
Western astrology uses the Tropical Zodiac which is tied to the seasons. Gemini is a Mutable Sign, which means that it is one of the four signs that ends a season. In the Northern Hemisphere, this is the last sign of Spring. The Sun is in Gemini at approximately the same time every year, from May 21 to June 20. The exact beginning and end date vary from year to year, so if you were born near the beginning or end of this time period, you may want to have your chart cast just to be sure.
By the time the Sun has moved into Gemini in the Northern Hemisphere, Spring is now underway. Life has burst forth in Aries and has taken root and established itself in Taurus. Now is the time for pollination, fertilization, and putting the final touches in your garden. This is also the time when many birds and animals have started giving birth, and Gemini is often associated with youth. This is a busy and exciting time with many things to do and many things to see.
Gemini’s Holidays
There are not really any major seasonal holidays that occur during the Sun’s sojourn through Gemini. In the United States, Memorial Day occurs at this time, and in Deanism/Filianism, there is a lovely minor festival known as Florimaia. Florimaia is a celebration of flowers, which have been called “love letters from Dea.”
Gemini by Element
Gemini is an Air Sign. Air Signs operate primarily in the area of ideas. They are social and are motivated by intellectual curiosity. Being Mutable Air, Gemini has the ability to flow and has the greatest freedom of movement of all of the Air Signs.
While all of the Air Signs enjoy talking and social contact, Gemini holds the prize for being the most talkative sign of the zodiac. It is common for Gemini to have a strong fascination for language, which is often treated as a toy. Gemini gets great delight out of puns and similar plays on words.
As an Air Sign, Gemini is a Day Sign, and she is also Soft.
Gemini’s Dignities and Debilities
Planets are happier in some signs than in others. Some signs support the functions of a planet, and some oppose them. A planet is stronger in signs that are friendly to her and weaker in signs that are unfriendly. The strength or weakness of planets in signs is known as their essential dignities and debilities. Below are the essential dignities and debilities of Gemini.
Ruler – Mercury
Being such a flexible and talkative sign, it is no wonder that Gemini is ruled by Mercury. Gemini is Mercury’s Day House. Of all of the planets, Mercury is the only one that is equally happy Day and Night. On the other hand, Mercury is slightly stronger in her Night Sign of Virgo, where she is also exalted. In practical terms, Mercury does a little better when she has the grounding and discipline of Virgo, rather than in Gemini, where she is allowed to wander as much as she pleases.
Exaltation
The North Node is said to be exalted in Gemini. While the meaning of this may have been clear in earlier times, in Western Astrology it has been lost through the ages.
Triplicity Rulers
All three signs of an Element are ruled by their Triplicity Rulers. In the Dorothean system, the rulers of Air are Saturn by day, Mercury by night, and Jupiter is the participating ruler. William Lilly also assigns Saturn to Air by day and Mercury by night. In his system, however, there is no participating ruler.
Detriment – Jupiter
Sometimes it is easy to see why a planet would be in detriment in a sign, but it is a little less clear when it comes to Jupiter in Gemini. Jupiter is always in detriment in the Mercury-ruled signs, Gemini and Virgo, and Mercury is always in detriment in the Jupiter-ruled signs, Sagittarius and Pisces. One of the ways to understand this is that Jupiter rules the macrocosm and the Harmony of the Spheres whereas Mercury rules the microcosm, or the many small intricate details that show the genius of our Creator. Jupiter rules galaxies, and Mercury rules atoms. On a metaphysical level, they are the same, but of course, they are experienced very differently in the world we live in.
In the case of Gemini, however, Jupiter still has dignity as the participating ruler of Air.
Fall
The South Node is said to be in Fall in Gemini, but like the North Node in exaltation, the meaning has been lost through the ages in the West.
Terms
In addition to the planets that have dignity in a sign in its entirety, there are planets that rule specific degrees of each sign. These are known as the planet’s terms or bounds. There are two main systems of the division of the terms, Egyptian and Chaldean.
Egyptian Terms for Gemini
0 – 6 Mercury
6 – 12 Jupiter
12 – 17 Venus
17 – 24 Mars
24 – 30 Saturn
Chaldean Terms for Gemini
0 – 7 Mercury
7 – 14 Jupiter
12 – 21 Venus
21 – 25 Saturn
25 – 30 Mars
Face
Each sign is divided into three parts, known as face or decantes. Each face has a separate ruler. The faces of Gemini and their rulers are:
0 – 10 Jupiter
10 – 20 Mars
20 – 30 Sun
Gemini and the Body
The arms, hands, and shoulders are ruled by Gemini. The blood also comes under this sign. This means that if Gemini is prominent in your chart, you have to take special care of these areas because they are prone to illness and injury. This is also the case if you have a Capricorn Ascendant because in that case, Gemini governs your 6th House of injury and illness.
If your Mercury is in Gemini, you need to take injuries or disease to these areas even more seriously. This is because of the axiom that the strong parts of your chart are the most dangerous. If you have a Scorpio Ascendant, you also must be careful, because Gemini rules your 8th House of Death.
Gemini in a Nativity Chart
When reading a Nativity Chart, most astrologers look first to the placements of the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant, which is also known as the Rising Sign. You can learn these by getting a Nativity Chart report from an astrologer, or by getting a computerized report for free from Astrology Season. Below are brief descriptions of how to interpret a Gemini Sun, Moon, and Ascendant.
Gemini Sun
The Sun has minor dignity in the last ten degrees of Gemini, but that is all. On the other hand, Gemini is a Day Sign, and the Sun is happier by day. With a Gemini Sun, you will be lively and have many different interests. Socializing and learning will be essential to your fundamental nature.
Gemini Sun by Day
If you have a Gemini Sun, and you were born during the daytime, you will have a great deal of energy and will be able to fully express your Gemini nature. Your Sun will be in a condition known as Hayz, which means that she is in a Day Sign in a Day Chart, making her perfectly at home. You will be cheerful and pleasant to be around, and all of the Gemini traits will be magnified and find positive expression.
Gemini Sun by Night
If you were born at night, your Gemini nature may be a little more hidden depending on your Moon sign. If you have an Air or Fire Moon, you will be very similar to a person with a Gemini Sun that was born during the day. If you have an Earth or Water Moon, you will be a little less serious or less emotional than you would otherwise be. There will be an easily amused part of you that can still be seen.
Gemini Moon
The Moon does not have any special dignities in the Moon, but this sign is located in the Lunar part of the year. On the other hand, Gemini is a Day Sign, and the Moon is much happier at night. With a Gemini Moon, your inquisitive nature will be a little more subdued. Depending on the rest of your chart, it may even take you by surprise. You may be annoyed with yourself for having a short attention span. If that is the case, the best way to handle it would be to make sure to give yourself time to play on a regular basis.
Gemini Moon by Day
If you were born during the day, your Gemini Moon will be even more hidden, unless you have a Sun Sign that allows her expression. Otherwise, it will help if you learn to be aware of the signs that your Gemini Moon is getting bored or restless. No matter how disciplined of a person you are otherwise, you still need to explore and have some fun. Gemini is known to be a very talkative sign, but in your case, you may find that you always seem to be surrounded by chatterboxes. You may not realize how much that it is you that is keeping the conversation going, however.
Gemini Moon by Night
The Moon is the dominant luminary for those born at night. Because of this, it will be easier to express your Gemini nature. You still may not be consciously aware of it, but others will be. You are more likely to get into long conversations and do your fair share of the talking. You will also have many different interests. The Moon also governs your taste in food, so you will like to try many different cuisines.
Gemini Ascendant
A Gemini Ascendant will make you friendly and sociable. You will maintain a youthful appearance well into late adulthood. In conversations, you will have a tendency to flit from subject to subject, and you are easily bored. In order to combat boredom, you have many ways that you can entertain yourself no matter where you are or what you are doing.
Using Whole Sign Houses, your Ascendant will determine which planet and sign rule all aspects of your life.
Home – Virgo
With a Gemini Ascendant, Mercury also rules your home through the sign, Virgo. Despite your varied interests, you do prefer an orderly home. Even if your house is messy, there will still be an underlying order to it. Your home will be filled with books and interesting toys. You are likely to have a collection of some kind or another.
Partnership – Sagittarius
Jupiter-ruled Sagittarius rules your 7th House of Partnership, and it can be hard for you to decide to settle down with just one person. It will be important for you to find a partner who can keep you interested and amused. It will also be crucial that the two of you share adventures from time to time.
Career and Public Reputation – Pisces
With Jupiter-ruled Pisces governing your 10th House of Career and Public Reputation, you have big dreams and aspirations. These aspirations may or may not be realistic depending on the rest of your chart. If they are not realistic, the problem will not be a lack of ability. Instead, it will hinge on whether there are other things in your chart that give you stability, focus, and stamina for tedious chores when they are necessary. It will be important for you to temper your visions with a decision about how much effort you want to put into your goals. Otherwise, you may have a dozen or more projects that have been started but left to the wayside because you got bored with them.
