2019 will be a year of drawing matters to a close to in preparation for the beginning of a new cycle. Just like our monthly rhythms are marked by lunar phases, there are larger rhythms that govern longer periods of time. One of the most important of these rhythms is marked by the Jupiter/Saturn cycle.
Every 20 years or so, Jupiter and Saturn come together. When they do, this is known as a Great Conjunction. Great Conjunctions mark turning points in world events, and they are also the Traditional makers of generations. The next Great Conjunction will be on December 21, 2020. The Jupiter/Saturn cycle works in a similar fashion to the Lunar Phase cycle, and this time is very similar to the winding down of activities that occurs deep into the 3rd Quarter Lunar Phase, as we prepare for the New Moon. Only this is on a larger scale.
When we look at the transits of the upcoming year of 2019, all of them can be viewed in the light of cleaning up and winding down to prepare for the new cycle that will begin at the end of 2020.
For that reason, before we look forward, let us look back to the beginning of this cycle, which occurred on May 28, 2000.
The Great Conjunction of 2000
The Great Conjunction of 2000 occurred at 22° Taurus 44. Jupiter does not have any essential dignity in this degree of Taurus. In fact, she just left her terms to move into those of Saturn. Saturn, however, does have a little dignity, as she is in her own terms. She is also in her own face in the last 10 degrees of Taurus. Thus, Saturn is the stronger of the two planets. This means that this cycle is marked by conservatism and heavy resistance to change.
On the other hand, looking at the disposition pattern of this chart, Mercury in Gemini is the final dispositor. Furthermore, not only is Mercury in Gemini, but so is the Sun, Mars, and Venus. It is interesting to note how much communication technology has improved over the last 20 years. In 2000, cell phone technology was coming into its own, and this was the first year that more than half of U.S. households had Internet. This was also the year that Personal Digital Assistants, such as Palm Pilot and PocketPC, started a surge in popularity.
The Moon in this chart is in Aries, and she is deep into the 3rd Quarter Phase. This means that this cycle is about remaining flexible and letting go, even though there is heavy, and sometimes violent, resistance to change of any kind. This theme is punctuated by Uranus in Aquarius square the Great Conjunction.
What this means for 2019
As we are nearing the end of this cycle, on a Mundane level, or on the level of world events, we can look at what we see on the news as the end of a cycle. This cycle is one whose theme is that of both increased communication and learning and heavy resistance to change. These two impulses are not even in direct conflict with one another but are working at cross purposes alongside each other.
On a personal level, this is a good time to look at our own resistance to change, especially as we prepare for the new cycle at the end of 2020. It also may be a good time to get rid of the old, obsolete technology that you may have accumulated over the past two decades.
Also, the oldest children born under this Great Conjunction are now coming into adulthood, and they will be starting to have a direct impact on world events.
The Highlights of 2019
2019 will not be a very eventful year transit-wise, especially in comparison to 2018. Both Mars and Venus will be direct all year. Jupiter will be in Sagittarius most of the year, bringing good fortune and hopefulness to many of us. The eclipse seasons will be normal ones, with only two eclipses a season, although there will be a total Lunar Eclipse in January and a total Solar Eclipse in July.
With that in mind, let us look at the major transits of 2019.
January
While 2019 will be a relatively calm year with respect to transits, it will begin with a bang. To start with, we will head into the first eclipse season of the year on New Year’s Day. Eclipse seasons are the time of year in which any New Moon or Full Moon will generate an eclipse. These tend to be rather chaotic times for most people.
Next, the Sun is moving into an exact conjunction with Saturn in Capricorn. This is a very serious and heavy aspect that tells us: the party is over, it is time to get back to work. This will be punctuated by Mars’ entry into Aries on the very same day, which will give the energy and drive to take action! People with a lot of planets or chart points in the Cardinal Signs of Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn will be impacted the most heavily.
The Solar Eclipse will happen on January 5 or 6, depending on where you live. It will be a partial eclipse, and it will be visible in Eastern Russia, Northeast China, and all of Japan. It will occur at 15° Capricorn, further impacting those with heavy Cardinal energy. Uranus will go direct on that day as well, potentially increasing the disruptive potential of this eclipse.
The Lunar Eclipse will be on January 20 through to January 21 in many parts of the world. It will be total and will be exact at 0° of Aquarius, touching those who are heavy in the Fixed Signs of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. Mars in Aries will be square Saturn in Capricorn on that day so the Cardinal Signs will feel the impact as well. These are the same people who were bombarded this past year so there will be a reprise of some of that disruption. The Lunar Eclipse will be visible in most of North and South America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
Eclipse season will be over on January 26.
February & March
February will be relatively calm. Mars will go into Taurus on February 15, which will slow people down with respect to their energy level. After January, however, many people will be ready for a rest.
In March, there will be the first of three Mercury retrogrades of the year. It will start at 29 Pisces on March 5 and end at 16 Pisces on March 28. Mercury retrogrades have the reputation of causing havoc with respect to communication, but some are worst than others. This Mercury retrograde will be happening in Pisces, meaning that disruptions will occur from a general sense of feeling foggy and distracted. Be forgiving of errors that happen during this time.
Uranus will go into Taurus on March 7, and this time, it is there to stay for the next 7 years or so.
The Sun’s ingress into Aries, or the Equinox, will be on March 21.
April & May
Mars will go into Gemini on April 1, loosening up some of the heaviness and lethargy from the past couple of months.
On the other hand, this month will begin a chain of the slower moving planets going retrograde, or backward.
Jupiter will go retrograde on April 10 at 24° Sagittarius. During the Jupiter retrograde, some of the good fortune that has been abundant will start to turn a little, so if you have a variable income, it might be a good idea to save money beforehand, because these next few months will be a little a leaner than they have been in recent months.
Pluto will go retrograde on April 23 in 23° Capricorn. Saturn will come close to a conjunction with Pluto, but will also turn around and go retrograde on April 29 at 20° Capricorn. The Saturn/Pluto conjunction will eventually occur, but it will not perfect until January 12, 2020. At the end of April, however, we will get a brief foreshadowing of what the 2020 transit will hold in store for us.
Mars will go into Cancer on May 19, which could make people more grumpy than usual.
June & July
This period of time will be rather intense.
Neptune will go retrograde on June 20 at 18° Pisces, creating fogginess for those with planets and chart points in the middle degrees of the Mutable Signs of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces.
The Sun’s entry into Cancer, or the Solstice, will be on June 22, and the day after the Solstice, June 23, will mark the beginning of the second eclipse season of the year.
The first eclipse of the season will be a total Solar Eclipse on July 2 at 10° Cancer, which will be visible in Southern South America. On that day, Mars will go into Leo, which will add even more drama to the effects of the eclipse.
To add to this, Mercury will go retrograde at 4° Leo on July 7.
The good news is that Jupiter will go direct again at 14° Sagittarius on July 11, which will bring back some good fortune and good spirits.
Unfortunately, though, we will then have a Lunar Eclipse at 24° Capricorn on July 16 & 17. This eclipse will be visible everywhere but North America and Northeast Russia.
Eclipse season will come to a close on July 27.
August & September
August & September will be relatively uneventful.
Mercury will go direct on August 2 at 23° Cancer. Uranus will go retrograde at 6° Taurus on August 11, and Mars will go into Virgo on August 22. Saturn will go direct on September 18 at 13° Capricorn.
Finally, the Libra ingress, or the Equinox, will occur on September 23.
None of these transits will be very disruptive, and they will tend to provide productive energy for work and projects.
October & November
October & November will be calm as well.
Pluto will go direct at 20° Capricorn on October 3. Mars will go into Libra on October 5. The third and final Mercury retrograde of the year will be from October 31 at 27° Scorpio to November 20 at 11° Scorpio. Mars will enter Scorpio on November 20 as well. Neptune will go direct at 15° Pisces on November 27. The impact of these transits will be relatively mild.
December
2019 will go out with a bang, just as it came in with one.
Sadly, on December 3, Jupiter will leave Sagittarius and go into Capricorn. Jupiter does not like being in this sign so there will be a feeling of miserliness and shortage. Hopefully, you will have saved money during the abundant period of Jupiter in Sagittarius to tide you over through Jupiter’s year in Capricorn.
Another eclipse season will begin on December 15.
The Solstice, or Capricorn ingress, will be on December 23, and on December 25 & 26, there will be a Christmas Eclipse at 4° Capricorn. This eclipse will be visible in Southeast Asia.
Conclusion
Most of 2019 will be mild with respect to transits. This year is a year of letting go and preparing for a new cycle that will begin at the end of 2020. The most intense periods will be at the beginning and the end of the year, as well as during the months of June and July. The signs that will experience the most disruption will be Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn.
